Day 71: Life

Day 71: Life

He was honking and flapping trying to prove he was worthy of the ladies attention.

It is mating season along the Sheyenne River.

Along with wolves, bald eagles and seahorses (just toname a few), geese mate for life.

For. Life.

Day 70: The word of the day is HONOR

Day 70: The word of the day is HONOR

They are supposed to be enemies.  They are to be part of a rivalry that is as old as time. But no one told them these assumptions.

They honor their differences, but more importantly they honor their similarities, both aware they were given a second chance at love, a full belly and a warm bed.  Despite what they are supposed to be, they are friends.

Animals are so smart.

Day 69: Word of the day is Help

Day 69: Word of the day is Help

My kids were playing an intense game of Old Maid when Noah wandered into The Vault, tired from track practice.

The boys know each other well since they are in Boy Scouts together. Contrary to the unspoken rules of adolescence, Noah is always kind to my son who is younger, and my son looks up to him.

My kids helped him learn the rules of Old Maid, but more-so, he always helps my son feel accepted.

Day 68

Day 68

It is such a North Dakota thing.

The Vault is an unmanned, honor-system coffee bar.

I think this is the perfect example of today's word: respect.

Our community members show respect of each other, and the coffee shop rules which allows the concept to work.

Day 66

Day 66

The Good Samaritan story speaks of today's word: Mercy.

He came upon the man, and showed him compassion and mercy.  He bandaged him, put him upon his own animal and set him up in an inn.

He loved his neighbor as himself.  He showed him kindness, and Jesus asks us to do the same.

In today's tumultuous times, remember it really isn't that complicated: love your neighbor and show mercy and compassion all of those around you.

Day 65

Day 65

Today's word is "Strength."

Their love is 60 years strong.  I ran into Doug and Vi at the Winter Show chili-cookoff.

Within minutes, I learned he bought a used tractor instead of a new car after the war. She worked as a nurse in Denver and Chicago. They first attended the Winter Show in 1950 and listened to Peggy Lee... and it cost $1. He thinks she may have paid her own way. She made him wait 7 years to marry her... I'm not sure if that was related to that $1 or not....

Throughout the brief conversation he would gently touch her shoulder, she would hold his hand. Their gazes to each other were something you usually see in the first 6 months of a relationship, not in the 60th year.

To witness an enduring love so strong was a true gift to me today.
