Sk8ter Leah: A Photo Session

Yesterday my daughter texted me to ask if we could do a photo session “to make her feel pretty.” Since I remember what it was like to be 13 and not feel pretty, and that was long before the toxicity of Instagram and social media…. (well in reality I know what it’s like to be 46 and not feel pretty…) I said sure. Yes I have a gazillion hours of client work to do, and a ton of other stuff that needs to be tended to, but sometimes that stuff just needs to be put on hold. Summer is almost over, the school year will “start” with less than ample certainty of anything, so on this beautiful Saturday afternoon, I wanted her to feel pretty.

She has worked several Senior Sessions with me this summer with the sole purpose of attaining her payment in the form of roller skates. Not just any roller skates, but pink iridescent roller skates she found online. She had a “look” she was wishing for, so today we headed off to the thrift stores and $25 later in clothes and accessories, the wardrobe was set. She wanted “space buns” (that’s a new term for me) and curls, so we went to the studio, and as we jammed out to the Hamilton soundtrack, I did her hair, and as much makeup as she is allowed to wear at her ripe old age. We wandered around downtown and shot in several locations. We laughed and talked and laughed some more.

As we worked through the session, it became clear to me, from a Photographer standpoint, that one does not need to spend a huge amount of money on clothing, or have to have unique or far off destination to create amazing images. It takes a vision (that my daughter brought) and someone with the ability to deliver that vision. She felt like a rockstar and it took $25 and 5 square blocks in downtown Valley City. I absolutely love doing stylized sessions like this.

From a Mom standpoint, its becoming increasingly clear how much I wish I could hit the pause button on life. She is this beautiful mix of innocence and worldliness, stubbornness and giving, quirkiness and quick wit. And, I wonder how she could ever not realize her beauty. I hope she can look at these and see what I and so many others see.

A message from Leah: Fight Corona! Wear a mask!

Those Eyes Though….

Its not all seriousness…..

The Value of the File

Often times in consultations or sales meetings with clients, I am asked “Do I get the files?” meaning, the digital files that ultimately create prints, canvases, albums and other products I offer. The answer is yes, but they cost money. A lot of money.

There is common misconception that image files are cheaper/less value/greater savings. The reality is my digital files are my MOST VALUABLE product I have. How can that be? you may wonder, since its just a block of information stored in a format that reads as an image. (I totally looked that up, I’m not that smart.) Well, the file is the end product of the pre-consult, the location scouting and wardrobe prep, the individualization that I bring to my clients to try to really bring out THEM. It is the actual shooting time, with equipment chosen specifically for that image, and then there is the editing. Sometimes this is not lengthy, and sometimes especially with skin correction, it can take a great deal of time. So, no a file isn’t just a file.

An example would be a famous recipe. Take the herbs and spices that make up Kentucky Fried Chicken. What are they? We know there are 11 of them, but who knows, what they are. But if the Colonel gave out his recipe, well, we would just sprinkle it on our own drumsticks. Another example are the napkins Picasso was known to doodle on. There is a story that goes:

99c6366d1fe0502da588194e28b7d1f0.jpg

Picasso is sitting in a Paris café when a fan approaches the artist and asks that he make a quick sketch on a paper napkin. Picasso acquiesces, draws his dove and promptly hands it back to his admirer along with an ask for a rather large sum of money. The fan is flummoxed. “How can you ask for so much. It took you a minute to draw this.” (Sound familiar?) To which Picasso replies, “No, it took me 40 years.”

While I’m no Picasso, I DO value the knowledge and experience I have. I have had a camera in my hand for about 30 years. Over the last 5 years, I have spent a great deal of money on educating myself about lighting, posing, marketing, and sales. I value the soft skills of life that 40 some years have brought to my experience with my clients. Things that cannot be taught in books, but only through living and observing life in a purposeful way.

“Can you just give me the files?”

Well I COULD, but would I just give you an album? Or a wall canvas? A metal print? No. I mean I could, but businesses usually like to actually MAKE money to pay things like rent and internet and insurance… so giving away merchandise isn’t the best way of making a profit. The file is a product, just like a wall canvas.

“I can just print them myself.”

Yes, Yes you can. And I can tell you not all printers/labs are created equally. THEY ARE NOT EQUAL. I’ve spent my own money and time and frustrations trialing labs (no I don’t use the same one for everything) to find the one that guarantees the products I receive in the mail look like the file I sent to them. There is nothing more frustrating than working on an image to get it exactly how you want it to look, to then receive it in print form washed out or lackluster. My style of work is vibrant and full of contrast. I love the blue of our skies, the colors of the flowers and for the blacks to be black and the whites to be white. When you order products from me, what you receive will look like the images you fell in love with.

“But I want to share them on the Facebook and Instagram and Tweeter and Tictac and whaterever else…”

Absolutely!!! And that is why i offer watermarked social media files! This is one of the best ways to advertise for me! I want you to be able to share the images you love! However these files are very different than full resolution files you purchase. Speaking of social media, the only thing more disappointing than having a print come back from a lab looking off, is having one of your meticulously edited image posted with a “filter.” Please. Just. Don’t.

I digress.

But come on Diane, they are just files. They don’t cost you anything! Can’t we just have them?”

Can I walk into Blush and ask Penny if I can have the cute graphic tee I love? Sure I can, but she will just laugh and laugh at me, and say “Uhm no.”

Photography isn’t different, though there is a huge misconception that it is. Maybe its because everyone has a camera, because artists in general make terrible business people, because with the advent of the digital camera, what once was reserved for a certain league of professionals was not in everyone’s hands. But the reality is I am trying to run a business. A business that pays rent and taxes, that has to carry insurance and pay a multitude of subscriptions and memberships to different programs and groups that allows me to do the work that I do. It is a business that has invested in education and equipment. Its a business that tries to give to nonprofits and charities and fund-raisers.

I absolutely love working with my clients. I love creating unique experiences for them and beautiful quality products. I know that I am not for everyone, and I am really ok with that. Just like I would never have the need or desire to hang a signed sports jersey on my wall, I understand that is really important and special to some people. And that is awesome! We can all value and support and honor that which we choose! And, I will continue to highly value my digital files.

This is about ALL of us.

Tonight, I can finally relax a little.

He is finally home for a few days.

The anxiety in our household has been high, because for the past 8 days, this has been my husband’s reality:

IMG_8066.JPG

Every night upon arriving home, he has stripped in the basement, showered before seeing us and his scrubs have gone straight into the washing machine.

I want people to understand this is about ALL OF US.

This isn’t about if you feel fine, if its a conspiracy or a hoax.

I will fully admit that 10 days ago I was a skeptic.

But oh, how I was wrong.

THIS is now HIS reality…

and the reality of his countless selfless, amazing

co-workers.

They will continue to don protective garb and see patients.

They will continue to go home with the underlying fear and overwhelming hope they are not bringing this virus home to their families.

They will continue to practice God-granted patience when people continue to defy all recommendations of travel and gathering, and then are fearful they are infected.

My Dad used to say this thing to me when I would want to venture out in bad winter weather…

“There are a few things stronger than you and Mother Nature is one of them!”

His warning is also true for this nasty virus.

Please, for the love of all of us, stay home and don’t give it the opportunity to show you its strength.

The Advantages of Studio Photography

I love outdoor photos as much as anyone! The big blue sky, the fields and water, the mosquitoes and 2000% humidity… It is awesome! BUT I happen to live in North Dakota, where 9 (10) months of the year are not so pleasant. So unless I was am going to just shutter the business, binge watch Netflix and eat Cheetos for months on end, I had better figure out studio photography.

When most younger people think of “Studio Photography,” they probably envision Awkward Family Photos. Boring backdrops, super staged, lots of props… But the reality is MOST of what you see in print magazines would be considered “Studio Photography.” Much of the images are on a set, or even if outside, they are lit artificially with off camera lighting.

What I love about playing in the studio is that I am in complete control of the lighting. I can shape it exactly how I want it to look , like in this image: I wanted Josh to be light solely by one light, with a bare flash giving him some fill and texture in the background.

In the studio I can play with fun gels, to produce interesting lighting, like in these images.
In the first, Talia said she loved blue, so I added a blue gel to the light source.

In this image, Abigail is a welder so I added a red gel to produce some contrast to her green welding jacket.

Another thing available in the studio is to play with a variety of fun backgrounds!

Here Lexi looks glamorous in front of a crystal chandelier.

Talia is playful in front of a fun beaded curtain!

Colored paper is always amazing for bright pops of color!

And I LOVE COLOR!

Katie and her camera pop off the turquoise background!

Abigail and her confetti are so fun in front of the green!

Talia is stunning in front of the blue!

The ability to create stunning, timeless photographs can be accomplished when I can control the light in the Studio.
